Three of the best Spring layers

These layers are perfect for keeping in your rucksack for those unpredictable spring days

Smartwool Corbet 120 jacket, £145

Smartwool corbets

Perfect for everything from blustery days in the hills to chilly mornings on the ski slopes thanks to Smartwool’s clever combo of temperature-checking merino wool and wind-repelling quilted wool. Extra points for the snug, low-profile fit, good selection of zips and comfy hand loops.

Rab Continuum jacket, £220

Rab Continuum

Weighing in at just 240g and exceptionally stuffable, this Rab jacket is ideal for keeping in your rucksack all year round. Its low-bulk design sits well under an outer layer and is even harness compatible. The 850 FP Hydrophobic Down, developed with Nikwax, is faster-drying, less absorbent and has better loft than normal down, making it an ideal choice for rainy-island dwellers like us. The face fabric is Pertex Quantum, which not only helps keep the weight down, but also keeps blustery gales out.

Arc’teryx Atom SL, £170

The ultimate lightweight layer? We reckon so. Tipping the scales at 250g, this Arc’teryx jacket is built for anything from running to climbing, and can be easily stashed in your rucksack. Lightweight (40g) insulation comes from Coreloft (known for being durable, easy-care and quick-drying), with breathable fleece side panels for added ventilation. Mobility is second to none, thanks to articulated sleeves and gusseted underarms. Despite its minimalistic properties, Arc’teryx have managed to keep all the essentials in, including a laminated hood, adjustable waist and zippered pockets. Clever stuff!
