Iron bike challenge in Ischgl

News — By Outdoor Adventure Guide on July 15, 2010 at 5:47 pm

A unique mountain bike event in the top Austrian resort of Ischgl will give recreational riders the opportunity to measure themselves up against the top stars of the sport.

The 16th Ironbike contest – recognised as the toughest in Europe and carrying the biggest prize money – attracts all the leading riders. But it has been cleverly organised by the Tirolean resort so that everyday riders can share the same start as the stars, to get the true race atmosphere, but then choose a shorter course more suited to their standard.

The leading exponents push themselves to the limit in Ischgl’s mountain bike highlight of the season on August 14, on a 79-kilometre course – with 3,820 metres of altitude to conquer – that includes a trip across the border to Samnaun in Switzerland.

More than 1,000 riders of all standards are expected to take part, chasing total prize money of 20,000 euros and the cachet of being the toughest rider of the year. Once started, less advanced riders can choose to do the full course, or one of two shorter routes.

The ‘newcomers route’ is 27 kilometres long, with a 750-metre altitude difference. The medium route is 48 kilometres long, with 2,050 metres of altitude. Entrance fee is 32 euros, which includes free food stations along the route, a photo and bike wash service and a pasta party afterwards. More details on www.ischglironbike.com.

A week earlier, runners take pride of place on the mountain when the first Ischgl Ironrun is held, on August 7. It is open to anyone from beginner to competitive mountain runner – with the course tailored to suit appropriate levels. The entry fee is 15 euros. An entry form can be found at www.ischgl.com/de-ironrun.htm, with online registrations due by August 5.
Late entries, up until the race, will cost 20 euros.

The Paznaun Valley offers a wealth of activities and attractions to holidaymakers this summer, including the first Ischgl Hot Air Balloon Festival in August. There are guided walks on mountain paths to take in the pilgrims’ route of Jakobsweg where mountain huts offer traditional Tirolean dishes with a modern twist devised by top Michelin-starred chefs from around Europe, including Ischgl’s very own Michelin chef, Martin Sieberer.
