Wild about RSPB’s newest nature reserve
Family Activites, News — By OAGmag on February 18, 2011 at 12:07 pmMiddleton Lakes opens to the public with a focus on wild play, which means a lot of mud splashing and wellie wanging at half term!
The RSPB will celebrate the opening of its newest nature reserve with a half term filled with wild family fun on 18 May – 5 June.
Cradled within the beautiful River Tame valley in the Midlands, Middleton Lakes’ philosophy is all about experiencing nature first-hand, rather than just watching from the sidelines.
With that in mind, families are being encouraged to visit the reserve and take part in activities including wellie wanging, Pooh sticks, mud splashing, pond dipping, den building and some really wild exploring when the site opens during half term.
But Middleton Lakes isn’t just a great place to play; it’s also a beautiful spot to simply enjoy nature with many quiet areas and beautiful views across the lakes and river.
When the reserve opens in May, visitors’ senses will be flooded with an abundance of different sights, smells and sounds.
Bluebells will be in full bloom, colourful dragonflies will dart around before your eyes, and the resident English Longhorn cows will provide a wonderful talking point (and some not-so-wonderful smells!) while grazing the rough grassland.
Other things to look out for include herons, kingfishers, various wading birds, and breeding common terns. Some lucky visitors might even catch a glimpse of a magical otter or slippery grass snake!
Nick Martin, Middleton Lakes site manager, said: “Middleton is a great site for everyone. Nature lovers will find an abundance of wildlife and miles of quiet scenic trails. Families will enjoy a hands-on adventure; splashing in the mud, building dens and doing some really wild exploring.
Visiting a reserve, no matter what age you are, can really enrich your life. So whether you’re young or old, a novice or an expert, like messy playtime or simply getting out for a good stomp, get down to Middleton Lakes - there really is something for everyone!”
