Elite running trail opens up to the public in la Plagne

News — By OAGmag on July 15, 2011 at 11:50 am

This summer, on the 30th and 31st of July 2011, la Plagne is hosting a weekend event that will have been burning holes in both amateur and expert trail runners’ calendars since this time last year – the one and only 6000D.

Some say that this discipline is elitist as the level of the challenge is so high that only a minority can meet it. Determined to make it appeal to a larger public, the 6000D organisers have come up trumps with a range of races that promise to deliver new diversity this year for runners such as the 6Découverte, a shorter 11km trail. The 6000D race is part of the FFA (Fédération Française d’Athlétisme) National Trail Tour.

New race - La 6Découverte (6Discovery)

This new race is aimed at all levels of trail runners from first timers to experts and consists of 11kms of trail and 600m total ascent.

The race starts and finishes at Plagne Bellecôte. The first climb goes up towards Dou du Praz on a zigzag course through the pine forest, leading to Lac Vert (its emerald colour certainly justifies its name). Then on to Col de Forcle and the last few kilometres to the finishing line go through lovely mountain scenery. It is less challenging than the ‘Trail des 2 Lacs’ (a la Plagne race that climbs up to high altitude on mountain footpaths).

The 6000D becomes part of the Trail Tour National

The 2011 edition of the 6000D will be part of the official Trail Tour National which is organised by the Fédération Française d’Athlétisme.

In its 4th year now, the National Trail Tour is a challenge consisting of 20 trail races that take place all over France. The events are open to all and competitors aim to gain points towards an overall ranking at the end of the trail season. The more races you take part in the more points you stand to win and the better your overall place in the French Trail Running Championship finals.

An unrivalled event on extraordinary terrain

The 6000D is the first trail event to have its carbon footprint officially assessed.

The entire workforce was mobilised before and during the 2010 edition in order to evaluate the event’s total carbon output and therefore its impact on the environment. After fact-finding comes strategy making so the organisation committee is now working hard to take measures to limit the carbon output generated by the event.

The Bilan CarboneTM (an official carbon footprint assessment) gives organisers a snapshot of the negative effect of the race on the environment and therefore helps establish where changes can be made to reduce the per capita carbon footprint without reducing the overall quality of the event.

One of the measures includes asking trail runners to please sign up on line in order to minimize the paper trail. Go to www.la6000d.com to sign up.

Training and preparation for the 6000D by ASICS

TEAM ASICS TRAIL is extending its training programme ‘TRAIL EXPERIENCE BY ASICS’ by offering a module called ‘le stage 6D by ASICS’ on the 1, 2 and 3 July 2011. Run by Erik Claverty, Manu Gault and Manu Meyssat this programme is aimed at all those interested in preparing themselves for the 6000D. The course will include a thorough study of the trail’s terrain and practical training sessions on specific techniques to improve performance without jeopardising physical condition.

Price: 350 €

A family weekend

The 6D Kids Garmin

After the “race of the giants”, it’s the Kids’ race! Youngsters from 6 to 16 years (accompanied by their family), armed with a GPS Garmin, will set off to explore the village of Aime. Rather like orienteering there are clues and answers to pick up on the way.

The 6D Rando des vignes

A 12km loop through the vineyards on the Versant du Soleil (south- facing slopes) via the villages of la Côte d’Aime.

There is also a new addition to the programme; Annette Sergent, twice over cross country World Champion, is leading a Nordic walk (an energetic hike with sticks).

The 6D Challenge – 2nd Edition

This challenge involves 6 amateur races a year that take place in and around la Plagne.

The Trail des 2 Lacs race is one of the six 6D Challenge races.

Starting and finishing in Plagne Bellecôte, this is a 22kms trail with 1100m total ascent. The trail goes up to Roche de Mio (alt. 2700m) via lac des Blanchets and lac du Carroley. It is less challenging than the 6000D race.
