Section of South West Coastal Path re-opens
Camp, Hike, News — By Admin on January 24, 2012 at 11:38 amGood news if you’re contemplating attempting the South West Coastal path later this year – a £20,000 donation means that a section has been reopened, saving a lengthy (and not quite so scenic) inland detour.
The Coast Path just south of the historic port of Charlestown in Cornwall, and has been closed ever since part of the cliff collapsed four years ago, depriving locals and visitors of walking the stunning stretch of path between Charlestown and Duporth, and meaning a not-so-welcome detour for anyone walkers attempting the 630 mile trail.
The South West Path Association donated £20,000 to Cornwall Council, and after (lengthy) negotiations with landowners in the area, the path was reconstructed through locals backgardens.
The South West Coastal Path follows the coast from Minehead in North Somerset right through to Poole in Dorset, taking in the route used by West-Country coastguards patrolling for smugglers. The 630 mile journey takes around eight weeks in total – best pack your best tent if you fancy giving it a go…
