Operation Commando: calling all mortals
News — By Outdoor Adventure Guide on February 21, 2012 at 1:33 pmWe’ve been bombarded with assault course promising to push us to our physical limit recently – from new craze Tough Mudder to the classic Iron Man. But now the Royal Marines are offering up their own rival; Operation Commando. The two day event will give “mere mortals” the chance to test not only their physical endurance, but also your teamwork, leadership and mental skills to the absolute maximum.
The brief: “Hostile forces have landed on a remote coastline. They are steadily making their way inland. You are part of an elite four man team briefed to repel the impending attack.” Forget your standard assault course and think minefield extraction, fire and manoeuvre exercises and casualty evacuations.
Deep in Pembrokeshire National Park, the recruits spend the first day being trained by the Royal Marines themselves across four combat zones: Land (concentrating on stealth) Close Quarter Combat where you’ll learn how to keep your cool under enemy fire, the Aerial Assault to test your courage to the max, and then the Amphibious zone where you’ll develop your teamwork skills while being pushed to your physical limit.
On day two, the teams will battle it out in the aptly named “Battle Day” using those new skills to hold off a hostile attack (not a real one don’t worry – you might need more than a day’s training before fighting for Queen and Country.)
Ready for battle? The event (if we can call it that) is taking place on the 5th-7th October 2012 at Bluestone National Park Resort in Pembrokeshire, Wales and costs £149 per person including accommodation (or £596 for a team of four). Proceeds go to The Royal Marines Association which supports past and present Royal Marines and their families.Visit www.operationcommando.co.uk to book your place or for more details.
