Gnarly Events 2012
News — By Outdoor Adventure Guide on April 24, 2012 at 2:40 pmThese hardcore events will keep your adrenaline pumping all summer long
Lowe Alpine Mountain Marathon (LAMM)
Where: Scottish Highlands
When: June 9/10
How Much: From £80 per team
This overnight mountain orienteering session is so hardcore they don’t even release the exact location until 36 hours before the event. All we know so far is that it’s in the highlands about 2.5 hours from Edinburgh. Ominous, but we do know that you’ll need some great navigation skills to make your way through the wild mountain routes. Just don’t forget your compass.
PLOD
Where: The Cotswold Way
When: June 8
How Much: £150
Not so much a plod through the park as an arduous trek. It starts at midnight, is 40 miles long and takes about 60 miles. It’s another event where teamwork’s essential (along with a support vehicle). If you have time to breathe, take in the views of the Cotswold Hills and the Severn Vale. It’s also a great opportunity to raise money for Action Medical Research.
Columbia HellRider
Where: West Wycombe Park, Buckinghamshire
When: June 2
How Much: £45pp
An 8-hour, off-road team, dualathlon of devilish proportions. Alternating 5km run and 8km bike loops, the race is open to individuals, teams of 3 and teams of 5, with the aim to complete as many laps in the 8 hour time frame. The run and bike loops will both include testing climbs and descents and genuine multi-terrain element.
The Ribbleway Challenge 2012
Where: Ribblehead Viaduct, Cumbria
When: 16th&17th June
How much: £25
The 100-mile multi-terrain challenge takes in the historic Ribble Way Long-Distance path, starting at the Ribblehead Viaduct and finishing in Longton, Lanchashire. Get some very gnarly mates together though – this is not the kind of event you go at alone! Or if 100 miles sounds just a tad too much, you can opt for the 50-mile challenge instead.
70 Wild Miles
Where: Fermanagh, N. Ireland
When: 23rd June
How Much: £30
A hardy 70-mile journey through the lakes and hills of Northern Island. Starting off with a 47-mile cycle, before switching to the canoe for a gruelling 10 mile canoe. The final 13 miles is completed with a casual half-marathon. A great, if very tiring way, to raise money for the CLIC Sargent Children’s cancer charity.
The Wall Run
Where: Carlisle to Newcastle
When: 23&24 June
How Much: £200 solo, £120pp relay
One very long run. Starting in Carlisle, this 69-mile ultra-marathon follows Hadrian’s Wall, taking in the stunning Cumbria and Northumberland countryside before ending in the urban majesty of Newcastle. There’s an overnight camp complete with very well-deserved massages and hot showers. You can also opt for the one-day only event, or gather some fellow runners and relay it.
Norfolk Superhero
Where: Burnham Overy Straithe
When: 23rd June
How Much: On application
Forget triathlons, it’s all about the quadrathlon. Starting with a one mile swim to whet your appetite, before taking to the kayak for four miles. The 47-mile cycle takes in scenic North Norfolk roads, while the 8-mile run crosses the sands, muds and marshland of the Holkham estate. A great way to get into the quadrathlon scene (and take in some coastal views while you’re at it.)
The Four Peaks Challenge
Where: Fort William, Scotland
When: 28th – 30thJune
How Much: £400 advance donation
14,00ft in 48 hours? It could only be the Four Peak challenge, taking in the highest peaks in the UK. Three members of each team bag the summits of Snowdon, Ben Nevis, Hellvylenn and Carantouhill, with a fourth team-mate driving the 1000 miles journey while the others recover between peaks. Not for the faint-hearted.
Salomon Kielder Marathon
Where: Kielder, Northumberland
When: October 7
If you’re looking to run a trail marathon this year, there’s still plenty of time to train for the Salomon Kielder Marathon. The route follows Lakeside Way, an undulating trail which stretches right around the shoreline of Kielder Water. It is the third year of the event and organisers are expecting around two thousand runners to take part.
