Suffolk Walking festival
When: 19th May – 10th June
How Much: Varies
A month of walks around Suffolk, from two mile ambles, to hefty day-long treks, all taking in the beauty of the county’s landscape. The main event is the five-day Suffolk Challenge, starting on the 20th May in Flatford. It takes in the Stour Valley Path, famous wool-village of Lavenham and the cathedral town of Bury St Edmunds, encompassing 9-14 miles a day.
Robert Dover’s Olympic Games
Where: Chipping Camden, Gloucestershire
When: 1 June
How Much: £6 admission
Didn’t make the cut for Team GB? Never fear – you can head to the Cotswolds to celebrate one of the inspirations behind the British Olympic Movement. Forget swimming and gymnastics though, this event is all about the weird and wonderful: From an obstacle race through to the British Shin-Kicking Championships. English eccentricity at its very best.
The Bushcraft Show
Where: Elvaston Castle, Derbyshire
When: 2-4th June
How Much: from £15 for an day (Adult)or £110 for a weekend (Family)
The grounds of Elvaston Castle with acres of woodlands, lakes and parks make for a great setting for this year’s Bushcraft Show. With woodland survival skills, shelter building, foraging and tracking to have a go at, as well as expert speakers and top-entertainment, there’s plenty to keep the whole brood busy.
Creeks by canoe
Where: Golant, Cornwall
When: 13& 27 June
How Much: £40 adult, £20 child
A unique way to explore the National Trust managed coastline of the spectacular Fowey estuary in Cornwall. Highlights include St Catherine’s point and Gribbin Head, as well as the creeks of Pont and Penpoll. Under 18s need to be accompanied by an adult.
Cheese Rolling
Where: Coopers Hill, Gloucesterchire
When: June 4
How Much: free
One of the wackier events in the outdoor calendar: hundreds of people the world over gather to watch very hungry people chase a round of Double Gloucester cheese down a hill. The first one over the finish line wins the cheese. Simple but effective. To take part, head to the top of Coopers Hill for 12 noon and get ready to leg it!
Just wanted to say that the Bushcraft Show, which was this weekend, was an excellent event. Weather was awful, but it was still busy and there were lots of interesting demonstrations and talks. Very glad I visited.
