Six of the best campsite-friendly cocktails
While setting up camp and sitting around a campfire after a great day’s hiking, cycling or canoeing, nothing goes down quite as well as your favourite tipple. Here’s how to create your very own cocktail (or six) out in the wild
Bloody Muddy Mary
There’s nothing quite like a tiptronic Bloody Mary to get you through the festival campsite mud.
Ingredients:
- tomato juice
- vodka
- squeeze of lemon juice
- dash of Worcestershire sauce
- ground pepper,
- lemon or lime wedge.
Preparation:
Shake well. Add the seasonings to taste. Garnish with the lemon or lime wedge.
Dark and Stormy
This one comes with lashings of ginger beer.
Ingredients:
- dark rum
- ginger beer
- wedge of lime
Preparation:
Blend together and serve before the clouds gather.
Sleeping Bag Sling
A good old-fashioned Sling is one of our all-time favourites.
Ingredients:
- gin
- squeeze of lemon juice
- 1½ tsp of sugar,
- dash of fizzy water
- cherry brandy,
- lemon slice
- maraschino cherry
Preparation:
Pour the gin, lemon juice, and sugar into your shaker with river rocks (see Tip 4, below). Shake well. Pour in the fizzy water. Float the cherry brandy on top by gently pouring it over the back of a Spork. Garnish with the lemon slice and cherry.

Who said romance was dead?
Ingredients:
- vodka
- peach schnapps
- creme de cassis
- orange juice
- cranberry juice
- orange or peach slice
Preparation:
Pour all the ingredients into your flask-cum-cocktail shaker. Shake well. Garnish with a juicy slice of peach or orange. and cherry.
The Portaloo Wallbanger
The perfect drink for those not-so-perfect private moments!
Ingredients:
- vodka
- generous slug of orange juice
- dash of Galliano
- orange slice
- maraschino cherry
Preparation:
Pour the vodka and orange juice into an enamel mug with rocks. Add the Galliano. Garnish with the orange slice and a cherry.
Sloe Hard-Standing Screw
Not for the faint hearted! We were worried we might be getting a bit close to the canvas with this classic option…
Ingredients:
- sloe gin or vodka
- orange juice
- orange slice for garnish
Preparation:
Pour the Sloe gin (or vodka) into a tin mug. Fill with orange juice. Garnish with an orange slice.
